Bluegrass 102

(See bottom of page for info on 101 class)

This class is ideal for bluegrass players who are becoming more comfortable with taking “breaks” and playing rhythm at moderate tempos. If you've ever wondered about the unspoken techniques of bluegrass jams, this class will demystify those “secret handshakes” and help you become a more skilled and confident player. Plus, it’s a lot of fun!

In these sessions, we’ll cover more advanced material than the beginner ensembles, with a focus on:

  • Kick-offs and endings

  • Understanding your instrument’s role in the group (both rhythm and lead)

  • Learning melodies by ear

  • Taking improvised breaks, and much more

All elements are tailored to your comfort level to ensure a positive and productive experience.

Before the class begins, the instructor will select a few fiddle tunes for you to practice. Each student will also get to choose a song for the class to learn and perform together. At the end of the session, the ensemble will have the opportunity to perform at a location in Boulder County (TBD).

This class is perfect for the beginning bluegrass player looking to improve their group-playing skills. To get the most out of the class, you should be comfortable switching between chords and maintaining rhythm on your instrument.

Throughout the course, you’ll learn essential bluegrass techniques, including:

  • How to kick off and end a song

  • Understanding your instrument’s role and how it works with the other instruments

  • The standard bluegrass song format (I, IV, V chords)

  • Learn how songs are arranged in a “band like” format

Before the first session, the instructor will provide a few fiddle tunes for you to start practicing. Each student will also get the chance to select a song to learn and play with the group. At the end of the session, the ensemble will perform at a location in Boulder County (TBD).

If you’re eager to learn the "secret handshakes" of bluegrass that are often missed at jams, this class will make you a more confident and knowledgeable player. And, of course, it’s a lot of fun!
